Project 1: Precedent Study

Download Project 1

Pin-up: Wednesday, September 5 (digital model completed)
Due date: Wednesday, September 12

Through a set of building precedents teams of two students will explore typologies of bridge structure: truss, arch, girder, cantilever, cable-stay, and suspension. Rather than bridges, students will study buildings which perform like bridges through their structural system but require enclosure supporting occupiable and programmatic space. This project will assist students in understanding structural systems and how they can be used to organize and define space.

Student will focus their study of precedents through digital and physical model simultaneously developed in studio and the digital media course. Development of a digital and physical model will generate drawings: sections, details, axonometrics and diagrams. Models and drawings should reflect a study of all of the following: tectonic strategies, structural and circulation systems, programmatic organization, environmental performance, material studies, urban condition, and spatial qualities.

READINGS:
Atlas of Novel Tectonics, Reiser and Umemoto, Princeton Architectural Press; 1 edition, 2006

REQUIREMENTS:
-Title, architect, location, sq.ft, project description
-Research Material (photos & drawings);
-Digital Model (Rhino)
-Physical Modes: study models, detail model
-Axonometric Structural, Program and Circulation Diagram
-Building sections; minimum 2
-Details: minimum 2
-Presentation: material above presented on 2 boards- 36”wide x 72”long

NOTES:
-Students are expected to use TTU library resources for research, in addition to internet and books.
-Please contact your instructor if you have difficulty finding material.
-Scales will be determined on a project by project basis by instructor.
-Digital model will be developed in Rhino.
-High level of craft and precision is required. Poor constructions and lack of detail is unacceptable and will greatly reduce your grade.
-ONLY the following materials are permitted for physical model construction:
  • Bass wood, acrylic, white matte board, mdf, piano wire, waterbased, paint, tacky glue, micro hardware.
Teams must choose two precedents within their catgory.

Precedents are not to be divided up per student rather developed together, realizing a cohesive presentaiton.
