3 Bridges Project 2: Bay Study

OBJECTIVES:
The studio aims to fast forward the international bridge to a future more
extraordinary through a programmatic shift reflecting an international
relationship which sees beyond transportation and defensive strategies
to one that relates to human and ecological conditions. A bridge will
not be a mere function of 20th century tectonic prowess rather a new
spatial condition with implications that advance infrastructure to a
role of cultural change in the 21st century. Project 2 seeks to develop
structural assemblies in relation to program circulation and enclosure
resulting in the design three structural bays for a single bridge.

PROCESS:
Project 2 includes programmatic, technical and code related exercises.
First program and circulation will be studied as a flow of human activity
which can be tracked and predicted through the modulation of space.
Evaluation of codes and their impact will inform this study. Second
construction methods and material processes will be investigated
through the design of a base unit based on structural systems from
project 1’s precedent study and development of the program and
circulation models. This base unit will then be tested for repetition
extracting possibilities for a system across three conditions leading to
the development of three structural bays.

Typical international bridge border crossing site.
Span = 500’, Entire bridge up to 1000’ Bay size: 60’x120’

Bay 1: At Ground- Controlled entrance- horizontal 120’ wide
Bay 2: Spanning over- horizontal 120’ wide
Bay 2: Spanning over- vertical 120’ high

PROGRAM:
Controlled entrances, vehicle and pedestrian circulation.
